Positive & Negative Space with a little Musical Twist!

The photos do not do them justice...but these pieces turned out pretty cool. My 7th and 8th grade students had to pick a phrase from a song lyric and illustrate it using this positive and negative space concept.

1.  We looked at this cool you tube clip using Michael Jackson's "Black & White" song to get us started.  We discussed positive and negative space and how this element of art was important in creating pieces.  http://youtu.be/OtRqHG_yP0s

 2.  My students used our previous color theory study and they had to select a color scheme based on what they had learned.  We glued strips of magazines down on their piece to create the negative space.

3.  They used razors to carve their designs out of poster board and mounted the final pieces on top.
This is Nate...he wanted his photo displayed...he was one of many that gave their fingers a little slice.  :)  Good thing they could handle it, ha.

Creative Color Wheels & Writing Prompts

Love these creative watercolor color wheels.  We did a color theory study and the students came up with their own pieces to display their color wheel.  The writing prompt was part of their assessment and some of them did a pretty good job with it.  Feel like we need to work on "explaining" ourselves more when we write.

The writing prompt my students used for their writing piece.

Color
Makes you feel…
Implementation
Blue
Safe and secure
Good if you need people to trust you
Green
Calm and confident
Good for making people spend money
Red
Energetic and vigorous
Good if you want people to risk
Yellow
Optimistic and cheerful
Good if you want people have fun
Pink
Romantic and dreamy
Good for influencing (young) female s
Orange
Willing to take action
Good if you want people to act
Black
Powerful and wealthy
Good if you want people to spend money

Use what you about color theory and the chart above to answer the writing prompt.

You are working for a video company and you are designing a case for the new “ART ROCKS” game.  This game scores points for creatively developing CD covers to match 2014 top songs.  In the box below, draw your cover for the “ART ROCKS” package and use color pencils to color your piece.  Then write and explain your reasoning for your design and why you chose the colors used on the video cover.

Color Wheel & Pointillisim Turkeys

It was Turkey Time so we made artsy turkeys.  My kindergartners looked at the color wheel and we also talked about the colors of the rainbow and how they blend together.  We found various items circles in the classroom to trace and decided how to make them various sizes and glue them in order.  Then we turned these fabulous color wheels into turkeys.  It was an easy quick lesson to do with my classes before Thanksgiving...and they look so bright and cheery in the hallway.

We also learned about Seurat and did a quick version of pointillisim turkey collages.  You can visit my power point link here:
