HECK YES, We LOVE Ed Heck ART!

My kindergarten & 1st graders LOVED learning about artist ED HECK and his simplistic art pieces that add just the right punch of color!  They fell in love with his art and wanted to learn how to draw every thing he had created.  This was a great lesson for making observations, looking at line, shape and color. Ed is an artist that has a studio in New York.  He has also written several children's books like the ones we used here.
I taught them step by step how to draw his creations.  Each class featured a different piece.  After they had theirs created which they were amazed at how good they did drawing, then I had them try to create their own pieces.  They are just adorable!!  If it wasn't the end of school we would have painted their pieces, but it was the last day and we just did not have time to get them finished.  I have not received the COLOR by Penguins book yet and am so looking forward to getting it.

Sesame Street - ish & Thomas Pastrano

I first became acquainted with the clever art work from Pastrano at Shine Bright Zamorano site and fell in love.  I decided to give it a try with my students and loved the results!

First I introduced my students to Jim Henson and we learned about his amazing art style of designing and bringing muppets to life.

We watched this clip of rapper Will.i.am. singing with the Sesame Street muppets and  used the closed caption so the students can read along with it as always.

I had students make observations of the different characteristics of each muppet.  (Colors, shapes, lines going horizontal or vertical, etc.)  Then we looked at Pastrano's work.  VERY COOL.

My kinders and 1st graders did paper collages with cookie monster, ernie, elmo & kermit

Two of my classes did the Minon's from Despicable Me 2 for our skit in the Benchmark Pep Rally to go along with our song Because I'm Happy!

Art is a HOOT!

Love these water color owls.  We did the wet on wet technique and my artist completely stressed out because they could not be so precise.  We talked about how the colors would blend and give it a cool tie dye look.  I really think they turned out well.
They wanted to define their owls at the end so they used sharpie to go back over and outline their pieces.

We used the book Little Owl's Night by Divya Srinivasan because I LOVE the illustrations. View the book trailer here:  http://youtu.be/RS7I2tfWQMU
