Selfie's - Value & Grids Jr High Style

GIANT SELFIES!   These were so creative and I love how giant they are!  My 7th and 8th graders created these and I can't wait to hang them up.
First we had to take our selfie's.  They either took their own or I snapped them in class.  They printed them off on an 8x11 sheet of paper in black and white.  Then we learned about GRID drawing.  We started off with my zebra drawing here to discuss placement, importance of measuring the grid, creating the appropriate amount of sections, placement, lines and shapes.  Some of my students had to learn the hard way, but most of them did very well.

Then they drew the grid on their photo using a 2x2" scale.  Next they drew their grid on their giant poster 6x6" scale.

They were totally stressed about how large their nose and eyes were... but once they saw the entire photo coming together then they were able to relax.  As you can see, some of mine did not quite get it to scale, but some of them did an great job.
They were able to use sharpie to outline, and colored sharpie to add one pop of color for emphasis.  Then they had to use paints to create their shadows.

Here Hannah is using our I Am poems I had them write to fill the space for the background.  I told them to be creative with their designing of their poems...some did better than others.

Lichtenstein Pop Art Portraits with Attitude

Excited about our new classroom cameras and our unit on POP ART this was a project that could not be skipped.  This idea was inspired by Ms. Lase's art room @ http://gmgart.wordpress.com/page/2/.  My students cut out a green poster board frame and I laminated the pieces for them to create their art on...it gave it a cool shiny look.  Then we hot glued their personality speech bubbles and they simply crack me up!  Below I will give more instructions and include my power point that I made for my lesson.
The students could use props and had to be creative in developing their pose that they would model for the photographer.  We discussed how their pose should reflect what they are wanting their caption to describe.  How fun are these?

Salvador Dali, Mustaches and 2nd Graders

Inspired by Jacquelien at http://kidsartists.blogspot.com we created our version of Dali style self portraits with a melted clock.  My 2nd graders really loved this project and the results were simple but really showed their styles.  We incorporated math by learning about the clock, placement of numbers and telling time.  You can see my step by step "How To" power point presentation at http://www.authorstream.com/Presentation/huskeyj72501-1762896-2nd-grade-mustache-salvador-dali/

Stand Tall self portraits

Meet Molly Lou Melon. Molly Lou is short and clumsy, has buck teeth, and has a voice that sounds like a bullfrog being squeezed by a boa constrictor. She doesn't mind. Her grandmother has always told her to walk proud, smile big, and sing loud, and she takes that to heart.  When Molly Lou has to start in a new school and a horrible bully picks on her the very first day, she knows just what to do.
Here is the FREE online link:
My kindergarten and 1st grade did watercolor with salt and glue for the background.  Next they drew their portraits on white paper and glued them on top of the watercolor.  Love them!!

Vermeer-ish: My Mother with a Pearl Earring

Kindergarten - 2nd grade did a study on Vermeer and we focused on The Girl with the Pearl Earring painting.  They loved creating their twist and drawing their mothers with a special pearl bead hot glued in the ear!  They drew them with sharpie then colored the blue scarf and remainder with crayons.  SO VERMEER-ish!

We Like to Move It...Move It!

We looked at bodies in motion.  These 2nd and 3rd graders had to draw a self portrait of themselves in motion doing some type of exercise to promote healthy lives!  We are a health wellness and international studies magnet so I try to incorporate as much as I can into our classes.  They had to add the writing piece with their art.  They turned out so great!
