Bat Before the Moon - 4th graders & Stellaluna

This lesson turned out even better than expected!!!  LOVED IT!  We used Takashi's piece as our inspiration, the fabulous book Stellaluna who you can also see at www.storylineonline.com for some of my favorite actor and actresses reading the books aloud, our first attempt at charcoal, learned how to make symmetrical bats, did a ven-diagram about bats vs. birds and finally I taught them how to write bat in Japanese. Love these!!  My students were learning about value and shading in addition to our first attempt working with charcoal.  They were amazed at how cool they looked.  Proud Teacher!!

Scaredy-Cat, Splat!

Splat the Cat is an adorable little thing!  We decided to use Splat as our inspiration for our latest Kindergarten and First grade art!  We read the book then looked at the shapes of the cat for how to draw Splat using charcoal pencils.

 They added wiggly eyes and a sentence strip with the Title and author.  Next week they are going to add the stem, leaf, mouse, spider and finish out their pumpkin!  They are LOVING them!
